Madison Roy isn't going to let cancer stop her from her dream.

Because of her weakened immune system, the 5- year-old Groves girl can no longer join the dance class she's spent more than two years with. But her friends at Sandy Calamia's Danceworks are opening their doors to give the tiny dancer private lessons once a week.

"When the Danceworks staff heard that Madison has been diagnosed with (cancer), we were devastated," said Kim Ross, director at Sandy Calamia's. "She has been dancing at the studio since she was 2 years old. She has displayed tremendous enthusiasm, charisma, and showmanship.

It was at a dance recital when Madison's family first learned their might be a problem, said Rachel Roy, Madison's mom. At a dance recital on June 5, Madison's dad Daniel noticed his daughter had a lump on her arm. The following day, Madison was brought to see the family doctor, where they were recommended to visit Texas Children's Hospital in Houston.

On June 18, the family received the news - Madison had rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer of the muscles and tissue that affects between 300-400 children each year.

Removing the tumor was impossible, said Rachel, since Madison would lose the use of her left arm. She immediately began a 40-week chemotheraphy treatment. She's now on week 13.

"It doesn't bother her that she's lost her hair. She says its going to all grow back, and its going to be blond," said the mother of the naturally brunette girl.

For now, Madison keeps up her spirits with her private dance lessons and her schooling. Three times a week, the Port Neches-Groves Independent School District sends a teacher to the Roy's home to help keep Madison on track.

Two benefits for Roy have been scheduled in an attempt to help the family with their medical expenses. On October 13, a dinner and music benefit will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Pace Union Hall in Port Neches. There will be live music, barbecue, door prizes, and a silent auction. The cost is $10 per ticket, and tickets can be ordered by calling (409) 549-0866 or (409) 549-0868.

A Halloween carnival hosted by Sandy Calamia's Danceworks will be Oct. 31 from 6-9 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend, and there will be food, games, contests, and entertainment. Admission is free but donations will be accepted.

The studio is located at 4201 Lincoln Avenue.
